The Baby

Where did you come from, baby dear?
Out of the everywhere into the here.

Where did you get your eyes so blue?
Out of the sky as I came through.

What makes the light in them sparkle and spin?
Some of the starry spikes left in.

Where did you get that little tear?
I found it waiting when I got here.

What makes your forehead so smooth and high?
A soft hand stroked it as I went by.

What makes your cheek like a warm white rose?
Something better than anyone knows.

Whence that three-cornered smile of bliss?
Three angels gave me at once a kiss.

Where did you get that pearly ear?
God spoke, and it came out to hear.

Where did you get those arms and hands?
Love made itself into hooks and bands.

Feet, whence did you come, you darling things?
From the same box as the cherubs' wings.

How did they all just come to be you?
God thought about me, and so I grew.

But how did you come to us, you dear?
God thought of you, and so I am here.

What?

Let me preface this by saying that if you are one of the people who asked me this, you know I love you and really, I find this humorous more than anything!...

I just find it so funny, interesting and, well, odd that not one, not two, but three people asked me this within a couple hours of my giving birth to baby Moses...

"How are you feeling?"
"Good."
"How is baby?"
"He's doing great!"
"Are you done now?"

Yes, I had this conversation with three of my dear loved ones on the phone right after he was born.

I realize some may think I have enough children... (enough? how can there ever be enough hugs, kisses, laughter, smiles, baby smell, hair to brush, shoes to tie, owies to kiss, tea parties to have, legos to build, little hands to hold, little darlings to rock and sing to...?), but really, can't I just enjoy this sweet, brand new, precious little guy before I'm pounced upon with "are you done now?"

I'm looking at him right now, two weeks old today... he is perfect. His sweet baby lips, soft skin, amazing smell. Oh how every dear baby just radiates the miracle of God's creation! Wow... babies just take my breath away.
